Sri Lanka is nine hours end to end. Build the fortnight around the jeeps.
Which Yala gate gives you the leopard hours. What a seat in a Minneriya jeep really costs. Whether Sigiriya or Dambulla wins the one clear morning you have. Reviews of every tour you can book on the island.
A jeep in Yala, the rock at Sigiriya, the slow train to Ella.
The four bookings a first Sri Lankan fortnight hangs off. What each one costs, and what the people who took it say.
01The first afternoonPrivate Tuk-Tuk City Tour with All Entry FeesColombo from the back of a tuk-tuk with every entry fee already paid. Three hours, and the city stops being a traffic jam.
02The leopard morningYala National Park Safari Tours: Morning/Evening/Full DayYala opens at half past five and the cats move early. The jeeps through the gate first get the track to themselves.
03The climb daySigiriya Rock & Dambulla Cave Temple AdventureSigiriya before the heat, then the painted ceilings at Dambulla on the way back. One long day out of Kandy.
04The blue trainKandy to Ella Train Tickets – Reserved SeatsReserved seats on the Kandy to Ella line. Tea terraces, tunnels and an open doorway for the best part of five hours.
Yala for leopards, Udawalawe for elephants, Minneriya for the herd.
Wildlife is why most people come, and the parks are not interchangeable. Three kinds of jeep day, what a seat costs in each, and the base you run it from.
Six Sri Lankan bases, and the day out each one is worth.
A port capital with a market at its heart, the hill city that keeps the Tooth Relic, a rock fortress in the dry zone, a tea town on the railway, a Dutch fort on the south coast, and the cold plateau above all of it.
More travellers take these Sri Lankan days out than any others.

Sigiriya, Dambulla and Polonnaruwa sit inside one dry-zone hour.
A palace on top of a two-hundred-metre rock, five cave temples painted ceiling to floor, and a capital in ruins that you cross by bicycle. The elephant parks are on the same road, which is why almost nobody does the Triangle in one day.
Colombo is a half day, and the half day is worth doing properly.
The whole Colombo shelf →
Most itineraries treat the capital as an airport with traffic attached. Give it an afternoon in the back of a tuk-tuk and you get the Pettah lanes, the Gangaramaya temple and a plate of kottu hammered out on a griddle before the drive north.

By tuk-tuk, tickets already paid
One driver, one price, and every temple ticket covered before you set off. On streets this narrow it beats a coach, and it is the version almost everyone ends up booking.
What a Sri Lankan day out really sets you back.
Every tour on the site, sorted by what you pay. A good number of the best days on the island come in under the fare from the airport.
Tuk-tuk city runs, cooking classes, cave temple mornings and a reserved seat on the hill train.
Full-day jeep safaris with lunch, the Sigiriya and Dambulla pairing, the whale boats out of Mirissa.
Three things that happen in Sri Lanka and almost nowhere else.
Beaches and old forts exist right across the Indian Ocean. A wild elephant gathering, a fishing pole planted in the surf and a mountain railway built to carry tea do not.

The Gathering at Minneriya
From about July the reservoir shrinks back and fresh grass comes up on the exposed bed, and elephants walk in from three directions to eat it. Two hundred and more in one place by late afternoon, the largest wild gathering of Asian elephants anywhere. The jeeps line the treeline and the herd pays them no attention at all.

Fishing From a Pole
A single stilt driven into the reef shallows between Koggala and Weligama, one man balanced on the crossbar with a short rod, working the swell for herring. The fishery largely went with the tsunami and much of what stands there now is kept up for visitors, which the families are straightforward about. It is still the strangest way anyone has ever fished a coastline.

The Kandy to Ella Train
The British laid the line to get tea down to the port, and it still climbs through the estates at not much more than walking pace, over the Nine Arches viaduct and round the loop at Demodara. Second-class reserved is the carriage worth having. The doorway stays open the whole way and nobody minds where you stand.

Ella is where the island drops to walking pace.
Cloud, tea and a railway on a ledge. Little Adam’s Peak takes an hour before breakfast, the Nine Arches viaduct is twenty minutes below the town, and Horton Plains wants a five in the morning departure to reach World’s End before the mist closes it.

It is raining on one Sri Lankan coast and dry on the other.
The southwest monsoon soaks Colombo, Galle and the hill country from May to September. The northeast one does the same to Trincomalee, Batticaloa and the Cultural Triangle from November into February. There is no bad season here, only a wrong side of the island, and the indoor half of a wet day fills itself.
Four things in Sri Lanka you cannot sort out on the day.
Most of this island can be arranged from a guesthouse veranda the night before. These four run on railway quotas, park gates, a monsoon calendar and a climb people start at two in the morning.
- 01Kandy to Ella Train Tickets – Reserved SeatsReserved seats on the hill line are released about a month out and the good carriages go within days. Unreserved third class is the fallback, and it is standing room.
- 02Horton Plains-World’s End Tour From NuwaraeliyaWorld’s End clouds over by mid-morning nearly every day. The jeeps leave Nuwara Eliya around five, and a late start buys you a look at fog.
- 03Whales and Dolphins Watching-Luxury Super Grade Cruiser(Hotel Pick up offered)The Mirissa boats work from roughly November to April. Outside that the southwest swell keeps them tied to the harbour wall.
- 04Minneriya National Park Private Jeep SafariThe gathering is a dry-season event, roughly July to October, and it follows the water over to Kaudulla when the tank refills. The jeeps run all year; the herd does not.
Galle’s ramparts first, then the whale boats out of Mirissa.
The Dutch fort is a grid of coral-stone streets you can walk in an hour, and the water off Mirissa holds blue whales from November. In between are turtle hatcheries, a beginner’s surf bay at Weligama and the stilt poles standing in the shallows.
Every south coast day out →Rice and curry is eleven dishes, and somebody will teach you all of them.
Classes run out of family kitchens in Ella, Kandy and Colombo: a walk round the market, a coconut scraped by hand on a bench, then everything you cooked laid out in small bowls. Most finish by two, which leaves the afternoon yours.
Up from Negombo to the rock, down the hill line, out along the south coast.
